Seventh International Poplar Symposium

The International Union of Forest Research Organizations (IUFRO) is a non-profit, non-governmental international network of forest research scientists whose members share the common goal of fostering global cooperation in forest-related research and promoting the understanding of technical, economic and social aspects of its research, including utilization of forests and their multiple wood and non-wood resources.
IUFRO Working Group 2.08.04 (Physiology and Genetics of Poplars and Willows) has organized the International Poplar Symposium (IPS) every 4 years since 1995. Several global scientific and governmental organizations and sponsors have collaborated to produce meetings where forest scientists had the opportunity to create networks and contacts, present new findings, and discuss ways in which such knowledge could be implemented to benefit society.
Building on past successes, Argentina is honored to organize the Seventh International Poplar Symposium (IPS VII) that will be held in Buenos Aires, from 28th October to 4th November 2018. This meeting, under the main title “New Bioeconomies: Exploring the Potential Role of Salicaceae”, will focus on discussing the management and conservation of genetic resources, the ecophysiological factors that define the production and sustainability of plantations, the utilization of technologies that maximize the genetic potential for obtaining timber and non-timber products, and conserving or recovering degraded environments. Scientific progress in poplar and willow research is advancing with new tools and technology that address social, economic and ecological changes throughout the world. This symposium is a meaningful opportunity for participants to integrate their own research with the conference themes and the thematic areas of the 2015 to 2019 IUFRO Strategy and to interact and develop international cooperation, thus joining the IUFRO network.
Two field trips organized to visit different production systems will allow participants to witness intensively-managed plantations of Salicaceae and to see the most frequent pests and diseases affecting them. Field trips to Delta del Paraná and to the Alto Valle Region in Patagonia will provide an excellent opportunity for participants to exchange experiences and discuss management alternatives across the globe.

Date: October 28th to November 11th, 2018.

Venue: Buenos Aires, Argentina.
